Nigeria nears lockdown as COVID-19 spreads

Nigeria on Monday inched closer to total shutdown as more states adopted stricter measures to combat the COVID-19 (Coronavirus) pandemic. Many states on Monday joined Lagos and Kwara states in sending Civil Servants on compulsory holidays to reduce social contacts and prevent the escalation of cases. The number of cases rose to 40 on Monday night. The first death from the virus was also announced of a 67-year-old in Abuja, who recently returned home after undergoing treatment in the United Kingdom. The Federal Government closed the land borders for four weeks. It suspended the weekly Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting, the highest decision making organ of the Executive, “until further notice”. A meeting of the Council of State slated for Thursday was put off. COVID-19: Ebonyi bans burials, weddings for one month

  by classic rex     13 hours ago  Emmanuel, Abakaliki  Ebonyi State Governor, David Umahi on Monday banned all forms of public gathering in the state for one month. The Governor stated this at the town hall meeting which held at the International Conference Centre Abakaliki, the State Capital. He listed such public gatherings to include burials, weddings, conferences, seminars and any other large gatherings. Represented by his Deputy, Kelechi Igwe, the Governor said the ban is for a period of one month in the first instance. He said the ban is part of measures to protect the people from contacting the deadly Coronavirus which has been declared a pandemic by the World Health Organization. He said: ” It is painful to take the decision but government had to reason that it is better to let the dead bury the dead for now. But if you feel that you cannot wait, then you can take the corpse and bury just you and your family without any ceremony and invitation to anybody”.
